10 June 2025, 11:00 a.m. – “Judging a book by its cover: a technical study of Italian archival bookbindings”
Katherine L. Beaty – Book Conservator for Special Collections, Weissman Preservation Centre, Harvard Library
With its distinctive brown leather covers and white stitching, the Italian archival binding style spread throughout Europe along with the Italian method of bookkeeping. For the past ten years, Katherine Beaty has been researching Italian archival bindings at Harvard. She is currently continuing her research in Rome at the American Academy, where she will visit and document the extensive collections of archival bindings. Through methodical investigation and documentation of the characteristics of Italian archival binding, she will explore the origin, evolution and transmission of this style of binding. Through reverse engineering, she will create facsimiles of historical bindings. The goal is to create a resource that will enable collection managers to better understand them and provide a reference resource for colleagues in related fields.
