The ICPAL – Istituto Centrale per la Patologia degli Archivi e del Libro had the honour of welcoming Monsignor Francesco Braschi, Vice-Prefect and Doctor of the Ambrosiana Library in Milan, as well as Director of Slavic, African and Oriental Studies at the Ambrosiana Academy, to the restoration laboratories and classrooms of the SAF.

In recent months, Monsignor Braschi had presented the Director of ICPAL, Dr Aurora Raniolo, a scientific-institutional request, as part of the mission entrusted to Rev. Dr Wessa for the establishment of the new Central Papal Library at the monastic complex of Wadi El Natrun, Egypt, intended for the restoration and conservation of the numerous ancient Coptic manuscripts now scattered throughout the country’s monasteries.

During today’s visit, Monsignor Braschi was able to observe at close quarters the sophisticated techniques developed in our laboratories for the preservation of archival and library materials of great historical and cultural value. He was also able to view some of the numerous restorations carried out by the Institute, recognising the role of ICPAL as a centre of excellence at national and international level in the field of restoration, training and research.

One of the objectives of the visit was to strengthen the exchange of knowledge and best practices, with a particular focus on the protection of ancient manuscripts and documents. ICPAL would like to thank Monsignor Francesco Braschi for his visit and for the fruitful dialogue that has been initiated in a sector that is strategic for the preservation of memory and culture.
