Open Day: ‘An Open Book. Between Paper, Parchment and Film: Restoration Excellence Made in Italy’

Ultimo aggiornamento 30 August 2025

The Istituto Centrale per la Patologia degli Archivi e del Libro (ICPAL), Italy’s centre of excellence for research, study and restoration, will present its activities and those of its School of Advanced Training and Study (SAFS) on 4 April, starting at 9:00 am.

The initiative will involve citizens and aspiring students in the activities of the oldest Italian institution dedicated to the restoration of books and documents. Visitors will tour the technical-scientific and restoration laboratories, with a particular focus on the technological equipment, and learn about the School’s educational offerings. Visitors will be able to interact with restorers, chemical and biological specialists, art historians, teachers and students, and receive valuable advice on the profession of cultural heritage restoration.

The SAFS course is equivalent to a Master’s Degree in “Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage” (PFP 5 – Library and archival material. Paper and parchment artefacts. Photographic, cinematographic and digital material) and qualifies graduates to practise the profession.

The day includes admission at several times (9:00, 11:00, 14:00). Reservations are required at ic-pal.scuola@cultura.gov.it, indicating your preferred time.
