“Italian Books of Hours”, Lectio Magistralis by Francesca Manzari

Ultimo aggiornamento 30 August 2025

27 May 2025, 4 p.m. – “Italian Books of Hours”
Francesca Manzari, Sapienza University of Rome – Department of Modern Literature and Culture

The HOURS/ORE project will be presented. Italian Books of Hours/Libri d’ore italiani aims to make various types of in-depth information on this particular type of book accessible to users and provides the first census of illuminated books of hours produced in Italy between 1275 and 1550 through an open access website.

The large number of copies preserved in Italian libraries and institutions has made it possible to launch a collaboration between the HOURS/ORE project, funded by the Department of Modern Literature and Culture at Sapienza University of Rome, and the ICCU, thanks to an agreement between the Institute and the Department, developed within the framework of Manus Online (MOL) Special Projects.

The HOURS/ORE website is constantly being updated, thanks to the progressive increase in the number of copies identified, which currently stands at 669 manuscripts and fragments. It is hoped that the files already available will subsequently be supplemented with additional data, particularly relating to textual content and analysis of the illustrative programme.
