Chemistry lab

Ultimo aggiornamento 5 July 2023

Activity

The chemistry laboratory studies the chemical structure of the materials that make up archival and book heritage and their mechanisms of degradation induced by chemical, physical or biological causes. He studies, especially for predictive purposes, theoretical models to describe these mechanisms and find solutions in advance that can counteract the natural aging of materials. It develops methods of chemical and instrumental investigation. Researches innovative materials for restoration, with the aim of increasing the expected average life of archival and book assets and hindering their degradation. These materials are designed so as not to create substantial changes in the original documents. It supports the restoration laboratory by carrying out preliminary investigations, targeted research and assisting it in case special chemical treatments are required on the documents. The research results are made public and accessible through editorial activity in specialized periodicals and participation in conventions and conferences in Italy and abroad.
