SCIENCE, COLOUR, PERCEPTION AND MATTER
The world, living beings, humans, we are all (also) matter that interacts with matter, and of this matter we have a perception that has evolved in infinite different shades, driven by the selectivity of evolutionary pressure to which each species has always been subjected in the history of the world. Our relationship with matter can be very different depending on the context in which matter is the object of our interest. Yet sometimes, indeed very often, and increasingly so, we need an objective evaluation of matter, no longer just a perceptual one, that is independent of cultural context.
When we need an objective, physical evaluation, a recognition and distinction of a certain material from another, science comes to us with instruments that, especially in the last century, have made great strides in the various disciplines. An extraordinary element of acceleration in the overall understanding and identification of matter has resulted from the continuous exchanges of knowledge between the various scientific disciplines.
Colour, from all points of view, has always been the object of extraordinary attention, interest and fascination on the part of mankind, assuming, in particular in the field of Cultural Heritage, a leading role. This short seminar will move on a rigorously scientific chessboard, placing elements such as matter, perception and measurement in the correct reciprocal relationships in order to have a global and exhaustive vision of what revolves around colour.
